Heavy Metal Finds a Home in Botswana

Image
A 27-year-old man nicknamed Cybok is a heavy-metal fan from the southern African nation of Botswana. Photographer Pep Bonet documented the metal subculture there in December. "I started listening to heavy metal in 2008," Cybok told Bonet. "I liked the way the metalheads dressed and behaved, so I started associating myself with them and I became a rocker." Pep Bonet started documenting the rock 'n' roll scene in 2008. He photographed the British band Motorhead, spending years on the road with legendary singer Lemmy Kilmister. But soon he discovered there were heavy-metal lovers in a different part of the world.   "I started listening to rock 'n' roll in 1991 till present, and I will die a rocker," said "Temple of Devil," or TD. "I grew up in a variety of styles, but I choose metal music because it made sense to me. I liked metal spirit. ... I listen to Judas Priest, Motorhead, Skid Row, and my favorite local band

A lot of people are pulling out their old turntables and records, and many people are buying their first LPs. What a lot of people don't know, however, is how to get excellent sound out of the equipment you already have. Sure, there are turntables that are far superior to others, but record handling, cleaning, and playing have just as much (if not more) importance than your equipment. Man Honors Blues Artists One Grave at a Time

Image
Famous blues piano player, Otis Spann was buried in an unmarked grave near Chicago after he died April 24, 1970. Thanks to Steven Salter, and his Killer Blues Headstone Project, Spann now has a gravestone. (Photo: Courtesy Steven Salter via WZZM-TV, Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, Mich.) WHITEHALL, Mich.  What started out as a simple passion for a Michigan man ended up evolving into a pilgrimage as his love for the blues is making sure some of the country's greatest musicians will never be forgotten . Many blues artists died before any of their music earned any money, which means several of the nations greatest blues artists are buried in small towns and cow pastures in unmarked graves. To Steven Salter, of Whitehall, Mich., thats grossly unacceptable. He has spent the better part of the last 20 years providing headstones for blues artists, thanks to a niche non-profit organization he and four others created called Killer Blues Headstone Project. It

Heavy Metal Music Growing Everywhere

Metal guitarist and Wilmington resident Chris Elliot of the band Omeni. COLUMBUS When iconic heavy metal singer Rob Halford of Judas Priest took the stage last Monday night and performed with new wave Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal, many fans in the tradition-soaked genre were surprised.  But Bowling Green State University anthropologist and pop culture professor Dr. Jeremy Wallach said the collaboration didnt surprise him at all. Heavy metal music isnt just growing in popularity in the U.S., it is growing in worldwide appeal, he says. And with that international growth comes a shift in what defines heavy metal music. The historic pairing of old and new music didnt surprise Xenia native Chris Elliot of Wilmington or music blogger Jonathan Williams of Washington Court House, either. On the Alternative Press Music Awards show stage in Columbus last Monday, Halford and Babymetal lead singer Suzuka Nakamoto broke into the iconic Judas Priest songs Painkiller foll

Image
Bluegrass musician Nick Novia plays at the grave of Marion T. Slaughter known professionally as Vernon Dalhart in Bridgeport's Mountain Grove Cemetery. Davis Dunavin / WSHU There are questions that might stump even the most dedicated country music fan: Who kickstarted the country music industry in the 1920s, even before big names like Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family? And why is this Texas musician buried in Bridgeport, Connecticut? His name was Vernon Dalhart, and he released some of the best-selling records of the era, including The Prisoners Song. You cant overemphasize the impact that Dalhart had on American music, says country music historian Bill Malone. He just revealed to the entertainment trade that the music he was doing had an appeal, that people wanted to hear it. By just about any measure, he was the first superstar in American country music. He recorded thousands of songs with virtually every recording label of the day. His two-sided

POPPY Chancellor is among loved ones hailing the musician in a documentary filmed two weeks after he was diagnosed with the cancer that claimed his life.  IRVINE Welsh and Billy Bragg hail him as a hero. Shane MacGowan was one of his closest friends. His romances with singer Neneh Cherry and actress Anna Chancellor made gossip columns, as did his friendships with aristocracy. But few outside of the post-punk music scene know much about poet Jock Scot. Yet his family and friends says his influence on music, literature and the arts was extraordinary. For Poppy Chancellor, his daughter with Four Weddings and A Funeral star Anna, he was just dad albeit a rather unusual one. Poppy spoke out as a documentary about her fathers bohemian life from meeting Ian Dury and The Blockheads and following them to London to becoming a performance poet and opening gigs for the likes of Joe Strummer, The Pogues and The Libertines is being finished.
